About M[Ex]2
The Mineral Exploration and Exploitation (M[Ex]²) Group at KAUST, led by Prof. Max Frenzel, conducts research across the mineral resource value chain, from ore formation and mineral exploration to mineral characterization, processing, and resource assessment.
Our work combines geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, data science, and geometallurgy to develop innovative approaches for discovering, evaluating, and sustainably utilizing mineral resources.
A particular focus of the group is the development of new tools and workflows for mineral exploration and ore characterization, integrating field observations, analytical techniques, geological modelling, and data-driven approaches. Through collaboration with academic, government, and industry partners, MEx² aims to advance the understanding of mineral systems and support the responsible development of critical mineral resources in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
